Memorial Ecosystems (link) is a company founded in Westminster, South Carolina 1996 to create conservation burial grounds as a tool to protect and ecologically restore significant natural areas. The company has the long term goal of protecting more than a million acres. In addition to the Honey Creek Woodlands, in 1998, the company created the first "green burial ground" in the Unitied States, and arguably the first conservation burial ground in the world: South Carolina's Ramsey Creek Preserve. The company has also consulted on projects in Florida, California and New York, as well as other projects in development. Ramsey Creek served as a laboratory for refining techniques and developing standards that are now the core standards for the Green Burial Council.
